Trophies, Awards And Crowns

Ever since I was a little girl, I've wanted to compete in horse shows. Still at the age of 34, I still feel driven. Honestly, I don't know why.

To be successful in competition, one has to be diligent, spending hours practising, getting fit, fine tuning skills....learning, taking constructive criticism from coaches. And it costs money, lots of it. Hours spent lazily reading by the pool or doing other relaxing things are ...well not very common, and even house work suffers.

When the moment arrives and my horse and I are under the scrutiny of the judge, I tremble with nervous excitement, hoping my trusty mount doesn't mistake it for anxiety and start sidestepping!

When I receive my ribbons and high point awards, I'm happy but realize that they are not my all in all. In fact I question then whether all the hard work and sacrifice was worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I love riding, competing and being with people with similiar interests, but I know there is more, and I won't find it in the show pen or even at the barn.

Last November when I received for the first time in my life, three beautiful trophies, I was reminded that as wonderful as they were, they were nothing compared to the treasure I would have in heaven-if that was in fact where my heart was.

The Apostle Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:8--"Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing."

Our earthly pursuits can bring us a temporary buzz, but I am convinced now that what we do for eternity by God's grace is what really matters. And after we have done all, and stand before Him our righteous Judge, we won't be ashamed, but will be crowned-not because of our good works but because Jesus our Lord and King prepared for us the Way.

He Makes All Things New

My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last December. Their pastor said a few words and asked us what it was that enabled them to have such a strong and happy marriage. Lots of things came to mind, but he interrupted my thoughts with a profound truth found in scripture.

"God makes all things new."

That was it.

"When life gets tuff and emotions go from love to nothing or even hate, we need to stay comitted to our loved ones and ask God, "Please Lord, forgive me for my part in this and make all things new....make our love fresh as the morning."

This has blessed me already. When I struggle in relationships now, whether marital or just friends or family, after doing all I know to do to make things right, I ask God to 'make all things new'. And you know what? He does!

When the Lord sees a humble heart crying out for help and sees the child like trust in His children, He swiftly comes to their aid.

He desires to help us and is closer to us than the air we breath.

"He who is seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!"....Revelation 21:5

We're Not Alone

"The angel of the Lord
encamps all around those
who fear Him(God),
And delivers them. Psalm 34:7

Ever wonder what it means in the Bible when its mentions: 'to fear God'?
Does it mean to be scared of God?
To be afraid of Him because He might just decide to snuff you out?

The Bible shows that the only people that need to be scared of Him are the ones who defy Him-whether they do it passivley or aggressively.

The book of Proverbs has lots to say about the 'fear of the Lord'.

Proverbs 1:7 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction."

Proverbs 8:13 says, "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate."

Proverbs 9:10,11 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you.

Proverbs 10:27--"The fear of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened."

Proverbs 14:27--"The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to avoid the snares of death."

Proverbs 15:33--" The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, and before honor is humility."

Proverbs 19:23--"The fear of the Lord leads to life, and he who has it will abide in satisfaction; he will not be visited with evil."

These are just some of the Bible's references to the 'fear of the Lord".

It shows us that to fear God, is to hate what is evil. In doing that we honor Him because He is so Holy and cannot bear any kind of wickedness. That's why Jesus had to not just pay for our sin, but the Bible says He became sin for us, having become the curse(Galations 3:13)so that we could be redeemed, justified, able to stand in God's Holy presence.

ThankYou Father God for making it clear- what evil is- in Your Word the Bible. Help us as we read Your Word, to gain a reverence for You and all that Your say. May we walk in the fear of the Lord, gaining knowledge and wisdom, adding length and satisfaction to our lives as we live to honor you. In Jesus' name, amen.
